Blood and Politics: The History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the MainstreamAvailable Now

“Zeskind’s rigorously researched and eloquent book is a definitive history of white nationalism.” —Publishers Weekly

“Zeskind offers a well-placed warning ” —Kirkus Reviews

“Recommended for all libraries.” —Stephen L. Hupp, Library Journal

“Exhaustively researched, Blood and Politics is not only a brilliant account of the origins, modes of operation, collaborations, and internecine disputes of white supremacist, neo-Nazi, Holocaust-denier, and anti-Semitic groups in America, but alerts us to the fact that despite—or perhaps because of—significant improvements in race relations and changing demographic patterns, we are likely to witness a resurgence of their activities.” —Drew S. Days III, Professor of Law, Yale University, and former U.S. Solicitor General

The Birthers and the 14th Amendment

The Zeskind Fortnight No. 19

by Leonard Zeskind and Devin Burghart

[Devin Burghart, my colleague at the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights, joined in researching, writing and thinking through this Fortnight. Thank you Devin.]

Taking umbrage at the attention that the Doonesbury comic strip has drawn to a "Birther Bill" sitting in a House committee, Texas congressman Louie Gohmert (Republican) recently told Washington Post blogger Mary Ann Akers that the bill, H.R. 1503, has nothing to do with needling President Obama. If it ever was voted up and signed, Gohmert says, the bill would not take effect until the next presidential election in 2012. It would mandate that the campaign committees of the various contenders for president submit birth certificates and "other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility..."

Gohmert served as the Chief Justice of the Texas 12th District Court of Appeals before his election to Congress in 2004. He voted for the Central America Free Trade Agreement, supported drilling for oil in the Alaskan wilderness, and he opposed same sex marriage. Gohmert also and joined the House Immigration Reform Caucus- - the hard core nativist group of 93 representatives opposing any legislative measure that smells even faintly of amnesty for undocumented immigrants. From that platform, he also co-sponsored H.R. 1868, the Birthright Citizenship Act of 2009, which would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to preclude automatic citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants that are born on American soil. This bill, which currently has 41 co-sponsors, is unlikely to get out of committee, and if enacted in the future it would run smack dab into the birthright citizenship provisions of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Pat Buchanan and the Mendacity of the Response to Sonia Sotomayor

Pat Buchanan and the Mendacity of the Response to Sonia Sotomayor

The Zeskind Fortnight No. 18

by Leonard Zeskind

The hearings are over and Sonia Sotomayor will become our newest Supreme Court Justice. Republicans have neither the votes not the will to oppose her.  In Pat Buchanan's attempt to muster an opposition to her nomination, he has been reduced to vitriol in his television commentary and lies about the military service of black soldiers. In such a situation, why should any liberal minded anti-racist pay anything more than passing attention to the grumbles bubbling out of Buchanan and the white nationalist blogosphere?

Well dear reader, it will take me more than 600 words to answer that question, but I would urge you to read on to the end.

Rereading the Tea Leaves
July 4 Protests Will Include White Nationalists

by Leonard Zeskind on Huffington Post

On July 4, tens of thousands of mostly middle-class white people in hundreds of different cities will register their opposition to the Barack Obama presidency at Tea Party events from coast to coast. Mainline Republicans will be among the protestors. They might carry poster signs about the rapidly expanding national debt, or against universal healthcare and more taxes. Expect also that peculiar brand of libertarian conservative from Congressman Ron Paul's Campaign for Liberty, which is actually one of two organizational pillars of the Tea Parties. The other mainstay has been Donald Wildmon's American Family Association. Its website has posted the names of more than 1,500 people who have signed up to organize protests in their communities. A total of 1,271 cities will have AFA "registered" events.

The Tea Parties will also attract a number of white nationalist activists this time around ...

Racism, anti-Semitism and the Murder of Dr. Tiller

Racism, anti-Semitism and the Murder of Dr. Tiller

by Leonard Zeskind

Huffington Post - Politics

Scott Roeder, who is being held in a Wichita jail as a person of interest in the murder of Dr. George Tiller, is widely known for his anti-abortion zealotry. Less understood is his connection to the so-called Christian common law courts and the militia movement. In the mid-1990s, Roeder associated regularly with both Kansas militiamen and he declared him self a "sovereign" citizen, immune from the responsibilities of paying taxes or driving with a registered license plate.

The notion of "organic sovereigns" was first promoted by the Posse Comitatus...
